The relay race is a dessert. All fans are waiting for the relay. The relay is the transformation of an individual sport into a team sport on a daily basis. The relay race is about emotions from the first to the last meters.
That is why the IAAF (now World Athletics) in 2012 in London made the decision to give fans more opportunities to watch the relay competition. Not only the "classic" Olympic contests, but also at distances less frequently played. Therefore, after 4x100m or 4x400m spacing runs - 4x200m, 4x800m, 4x1500m, 1200 + 400 + 800 + 1600m and even in 4x110m hurdles were added to the program.
The World Athletics Relays is a feast for fans, but also an extremely important competition for the national teams - because it allows them to qualify for the main events of the season - the World Championships or the Olympic Games in the relay events that are part of the programme (4x100m F + M, 4x400m F + M, 4x400m Mix). The upcoming World Athletics Relays Silesia21 will be the last opportunity to get Olympic passports to Tokyo.
The first historic World Athletics Relays was held in the Bahamas in May 2014. This Caribbean country hosted two more editions in 2015 and 2017. The fourth one was held in Yokohama, Japan in 2019. World Relays Silesia21 - will be the fifth event of the series.
In the history of the World Athletics Relays, Poland has won 7 medals - four silver, 2 bronze, one gold. The most valuable one, of course, came in the women's 4x400m relay race in Yokohama in 2019. Matusiński's Angels defeated the world champions and Olympic gold medallists - from the United States for the first time in their career.
